Cecil Wright was born in 1919 (Mildenhall Q4-1919 4A:1865), son of Arthur H.O. and Daisy M. WRIGHT (née GRIMWOOD).
In 1939 the family were at 5 Council Houses, Bell Lane, BartonMills - his father [24-11-1895] RAF Batman; mother [8-8-1899]; sister Ethel M [14-11-1921] later PRATT; grandfather Charles GRIMWOOD [29-4-1858] invalid. H.M.S. Zinnia was a Flower Class Corvette, commissioned 30th March 1941 Convoy OG-71 consisting of 23 merchantmen and 13 escorts, left Liverpool for Gibraltar on 13th August 1941. On 23rd August at 05:25, HMS Zinnia, when west of Portugal, at 40:25 N- 10:40 W was sunk by a torpedo from U-564, commanded by Reihard Suhren. There were 17 survivors. That afternoon, the convoy, having lost 7 merchant ships (4 to U-210, 2 to U-564 and 1 to U-559), was diverted to Lisbon. Most then sailed on to Gibraltar, arriving 25th August. The first merchantman sunk, the Aguila, carried the first WRNS (Womens Royal Navy Service) to serve overseas, all 21 were lost.
